Some journeys are not just about reaching the destination, but what you find along the way.
As we all know, India is a land of diverse culture. It is a country of various languages, beliefs and religions, one of which being Hinduism. It is the dominant religion in India practiced by millions of devotees woven by a tapestry of faith, rituals and spiritual traditions. Spirituality breathes across this country connecting people to something far greater than mere existence.
One of the most cherished expressions of their belief towards God is pilgrimage or yatra. It holds a lot of significance in this religion. People who follow Hinduism have journeyed mountains, rivers and cities to seek blessings for ages. It is believed that these sacred travels help them get closer to Moksha (liberation). It helps them to cleanse their soul and earn punya( merit).
In this blog I will be covering the top 3 spiritual journeys in India that devotees must experience: Mathura Vrindavan visit at Janmashtami, Ratha Yatra darshan at Puri, and Visiting Babadhan at Shravan Mela. Each spiritual journey holds its own significance in hindu mythology.
It is a festival celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Krishna and no place celebrates it like Mathura and Vrindavan. The residents of Mathura and Vrindavan celebrate it on a grand scale as it is the birth town of lord krishna. The festival is a vibrant one and the devotees celebrate it with intense devotion. It includes cultural programs and joyful festivities specially during the midnight as in the hindu mythology it is believed he was born at midnight.
On this day, the temples like Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura and Banke Bihari in Vrindavan are beautifully adorned with flowers and decorations. People offer pujas, abhishek (bathing the deity), and midnight aartis are performed . Devotees chant "Hare Krishna," bhajans, and kirtans creating a spiritual atmosphere. Cultural and theatrical performances are also held in which they depict the life of Lord Krishna. People also fast during this time and at midnight they break their fast with special offerings making it a joyous celebration. During the day people form human pyramids to break the dahi handi which is filled with dahi or butter to depict his playful nature. He was popularly known as “makhan chor”. Janmashtami in Mathura and Vrindavan allows you to experience spirituality in its purest form. You get to know about Krishna's life closely as he spent most of his childhood here. A Mathura Vrindavan visit at Janmashtami is an emotional and divine journey.

A major hindu festival celebrated every year in Puri, Odisha is the rath yatra also known as the chariot festival. The Ratha Yatra darshan at Puri is one of the majestic spiritual celebrations in India. During this time three deities of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra are taken on a procession on chariots. Lord Balabhadra is his elder brother and Devi Subhadra is his sister. All the three deities are taken in separate chariots from Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple covering a distance of approximately 2 km in a grand procession called Pahandi. Lord Jagannath's chariot has 16 wheels, Lord Balabhadra’s chariot has 14 wheels and Devi Subhadra’s chariot has 12 wheels. People take immense joy in the preparation of the chariots as it begins in advance.
Visiting Babadham at Shravan Mela is another unmissable journey. The babadham festival is a month-long festival celebrated in Deoghar, Jharkhand every year. The key highlight of this festival is the kanwar yatra which is 109 km long walk during which they chant “bol bam” barefoot. It is known to be the longest religious fair in the world. It takes place during the shravan month(july-august) when the devotees known as Kanwariyas walk from Sultanganj to Deoghar carrying holy water of the river ganga. One of the twelve Jyotirlingas is at the Baba Baidyanath Temple so after reaching Deoghar the devotees first purify themselves and then they offer to the jyotirlingas at the Baba Baidyanath Temple. The devotees believe that this pilgrimage absolves their sins. Thus, it holds significance in the hindu religion. The festival attracts crowds from all over the world. Approximately 5-5.5 million tourists come to visit this festival. The baba baidyanath temple is not only recognised for the shravan mela but is also famous for other major festivals like Shivaratri and Basant Panchami.
